Recreation Director

The Town of Sharon is seeking qualified candidates for a Recreation Director and join the Town’s senior management team to manage year-round, comprehensive youth and adult recreation and cultural programs.

The Director is appointed by the Select Board, reports to the Town Administrator, and works closely with the Recreation Advisory Committee to manage a $850K general operating/revolving funds budget, two full-time, one part-time and approximately 40 seasonal employees. Recreation programs include a robust youth fall basketball program at school facilities and a summer aquatics program on lakefront beach. Facilities include parks, playgrounds, athletic fields and courts and 45K s.f. community center shared with senior services. The Director acts as the department liaison with sporting groups; schedules fields and related facilities for recreational programs; coordinate with the Department of Public Works regarding the maintenance of fields and facilities.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Develops and plan services to meet the recreational needs of the community; handles long-range planning related to recreational programs and operations.
  • Implement changes to existing programs and the introduction of new innovative programs; calculate and ensure that sufficient fee revenues are available to offset operating expenses.
  • Oversee the administrative operation of the department; prepare and recommend the operating and capital budgets as well as the revolving funds; track and review related fee support revenues and operating expenses; seeks alternate sources of funding by means of grant applications.
  • Prepares and administers annual departmental, revolving funds and capital budget.
  • Direct, lead, motivate staff and provide overall supervision and training for department personnel; hire seasonal/temporary employees, select coaches, recruit, hire and train staff and volunteers.
  • Evaluate existing recreational assets; work with the Town Administrator in recommending and developing new recreational assets to include fields, structures and facilities that meet the recreational needs of the Town.

Qualifications and Experience:  Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Sports Management, Physical Education, Public Administration or a related field and three to five (3-5) years’ recreation experience, with experience supervising staff. Certification or qualified for certification with the National Recreation and Park Association is desirable. The successful candidate will have demonstrated strong organizational, communication, and community relations skills, with a history of innovation and collaborative team building, and strong management abilities.  CORI and valid driver’s license required.

Starting Salary Range: $84,875 - $92,500 depending on qualifications, with generous benefits, including a life and disability insurance plan covered by the Town.
